The Axel 1 occurrence is located northwest of Axel Lake, in the headwaters of Rennie Creek.

In 1972, Noranda Exploration completed a program of soil sampling and a VLF-EM survey on the Pest claims. This work identified several anomalous areas. In 1987, the Axel claims were staked by Covenant Resources on the former Pest claims and field programs identified numerous heavy sulphide zones and a soil copper-gold anomaly. During 1990 through 1992, Teck Exploration completed various exploration programs of prospecting, geochemical sampling and magnetic surveys.

The area is underlain by massive, locally brecciated basalt and conglomerates of the Mississippian to Devonian Fennell Formation.

Locally, an area of intense pyritic alteration with minor chalcopyrite is hosted by an angular, coarse clastic volcanic breccia-conglomerate within the Devonian to Mississippian Fennell Formation. Sulphide mineralization is reported to occur as disseminations to massive pods (Assessment Report 17622).

In 1991, the Axel claims were staked by Teck Exploration to cover an area of alteration exposed by recent logging work. The area was previously explored in 1972 as the Pest claims, by Noranda Exploration, who completed a program of soil sampling and a VLF-EM survey. This work identified several anomalous areas. In 2008 and 2009, Vendetta Mining completed programs of rock and soil sampling on the area as the Honeymoon project. During 2010 through 2012, Black Mountain Mining prospected and soil sampled the area.
